St. George’s Hill’s star Andy Raitt shot back to back 67s at West Hill at win The PGA in Surrey Championship by two.
Reflecting on his triumph, Raitt commented: “West Hill was at its very best, and to make our day complete, the rain stayed away while it poured down elsewhere. I was happy with the way I played, I didn’t make too many mistakes and took the opportunities when they came.”
He continued: “We were all very impressed by the way Guy Shoesmith, The PGA in Surrey Chairman and West Hill’s Head PGA Professional, set things up for another great day’s golf.”
Whilst Raitt picked up £800 for his efforts, the highlight of his day came early in the afternoon when he made three birdies on the trot to overtake the 66 of first round leader Angus Mottershead (Sunbury Golf Centre).
The good news for Mottershead was that his 66 still helped Mottershead to win the Leading Trainee prize for the day.
In second spot David Copsey (DCGS Poult Wood) enjoyed some more top form with an afternoon 66 to add to his opening round of 70, while Lingfield Park’s Gary Gilligan had the round of the day - a 65 - in the afternoon to take him to third place.
Not content with beating the youngsters, Raitt doubled up and took The PGA in Surrey Senior Championship title, which was played in conjunction with the morning round for those aged 48 and over.
As captain elect Cliff Gough tweeted: “We were so lucky to play at West Hill today…the course was in amazing condition…and Andy Raitt still plays so well, even though he is now a grandfather!!”
