Mike Raj believes Whittington Heath Golf Club will be moving into the modern era as one of the oldest clubs in England prepares for major redevelopment work.
The Staffordshire club - was founded in 1886 - faced an uncertain future after plans for the new HS2 high speed rail line cut across their course and meant the demolition of their clubhouse.
But last September, the Government agreed a deal with the club to pay for a replacement clubhouse, five new holes, practice range, remodelling of five existing holes and a new car park.
Now, almost eight months on, Raj says they are prepared for the upheaval but also looking long term at a remodelled venue.
Raj is set to play in the Midlands qualifying event of the Titleist & FootJoy PGA Professional Championship which takes place on Friday, April 28 at Little Aston Golf Club near Birmingham.
Some of the top club professionals in the Midlands will be aiming to reach the £78,000 grand final which is being held in Ireland this year at Luttrelstown Castle Golf Club near Dublin on June 13-16.
And Raj says he can take part knowing Lichfield-based Whittington Heath’s future is secure.
“We had expected work to start in April but there have been a few delays,” said Raj.
“Realistically, we don’t expect HS2 works to affect us until 2020 at the earliest.
“But there is a future of the club, that has been the important thing.
“In a few years time, there will be a modernised facility here and we’re looking at the big picture - even though there will be some disruption in the meantime.”
Raj says the club are trying to make sure the feel of the Harry Colt designed course remains the same.
“Heathland courses are not that common so we want to make sure the five new holes reflect that,” he said.
Raj admits the PGA Professional Championship qualifiers have not been kind to him in recent years.
But he says the venue is well known to him.
“I don’t live too far away from Little Aston and I’ve played events there before of course,” he said.
“It’s a tremendous course for a competition like this.
“I just hope I have a little more luck than I’ve had in previous years.”
Among those due to take part in the Little Aston even are: Host PGA professional Brian Rimmer, Craig Shave (Whetstone Golf Club); Ian Wallet (Kedleston Park Golf Club); Jack Hamblett (Ultimate Golf); Michael Bradley (Notts Golf Club); Daniel Clee (Evesham Golf Club); Nick Soto (Northampton Golf Club) and Scott Emery (Woodhall Spa Golf Club).
