David Reilly won a shootout with Eamon Brady to win the €10,000 Johnston, Mooney and O’Brien PGA 36-hole Challenge Tournament at Carton House.

The Westmanstown pro holed a nervous 20-foot putt after the round went into extra time, as the players were deadlocked at six-under-par 136.

Both Reilly and Brady had spread birdies and bogeys over their second round but could not be separated, so were sent out to decide the issue in sudden death.

The par four 18th hole was the starting place and when Reilly put his tee-shot into rough left, with Brady splitting the fairway, the advantage seemed to be with the Clontarf man.

He rifled his second shot on to the green but the ball got a quirky bounce over the back and into a bunker.

Reilly played a crafty second approach out of the rough and on to the putting surface, 10 feet from the pin. Brady splashed out of the sand splendidly to less than a foot from the hole with his par certain.

However, Reilly took his chance brilliantly and slotted in his 10-footer for birdie and the title, his first major win.

Overnight leader Dara Lernihan, who opened with a sizzling six-under-66, took 10 extra shots yesterday to slide back down the leaderboard to joint seventh position, alongside seven other players.
