Tom Richardson is using his PGA training to gain invaluable experience of one of golf’s most historic transatlantic matches.
Richardson, of Foxhills Club & Resort in Surrey, is set to take part in the Galvin Green PGA Assistants' Championship South qualifier at Farleigh Golf Club near Warlingham, on May 9.
Foxhills will be the venue for this year’s PGA Cup which is contested by Great Britain & Ireland against the USA every two years.
This year’s event is in England and Richardson is thrilled his job allows him to get close to the build up to the September contest.
“It’s a great time to be part of the club at Foxhills, I’m really enjoying it, and it’s buzzing here,” said 22-year-old final year assistant Richardson
“I’m looking to go into the management side of things and the PGA course gives you that basic grounding.
“The golf operations officer here is a good friend of mine and I get to speak with him about the PGA Cup most days.
“I get to see his role in depth. But even things like ordering the PGA Cup golf balls and the buggies, it’s a big push for the branding of the event.
“The operations side makes it happen and I can see that. But we also have the PGA Seniors Championship coming up in May.
“It’s interesting for me to work through those events. I only joined in September but it’s exciting to see how it all works and what you need to do to make it a success. It’s good to have on the CV.”
But in the meantime, Richardson will be focusing on the Fareligh event where he hopes - for the first time - to reach the £32,000 grand final which is being held at Coxmoor Golf Club in Nottinghamshire between August 2-4.
“It’ll be good to get to the final and see some of the people I’ve been studying with over the years - but I’ve never got there before, last year I bogeyed the last and missed qualification by one shot which was frustrating - now I want to go back and correct that,” he said.
“It’s the biggest assistants’ event of the year.”
Other players from the south of England set to take part in the Farleigh qualifier include: Sam Jarrett (London Golf Club); Jack Martin (Haywards Heath Golf Club); Zak Morgan (Chatham Golf Centre); Joseph Queen (West Sussex Golf Club); Harry Tyrrell (Hindhead Golf Club); Alex Williams (Central London Golf Centre) and Alexander Caldicott (The Berkshire Golf Club).
