The Point at Polzeath’s Roy Arnold believes he has done ‘world of good’ for his club after reaching the Golfplan Insurance PGA Pro-Captain Challenge final in Turkey.
Club captain Arnold (pictured on right) partnered PGA Professional Richard O’Hanlon (left) to win their qualifying event at Woodbury Park Golf & Country Club near Exeter.
On a low scoring day they won by just one shot, carding an impressive 11-under-par round of 61 and pipping four other teams to the top spot.
The duo will now represent the Cornwall club in the £25,000 final, supported by Canopius, over the PGA Sultan course at Antalya Golf Club, Turkey, from November 21-22.
A delighted Arnold said: “We were a run-down club and now we’re trying to build it up again.
“Richard wants to push us as much as possible and this will do us a world of good.
“We want to put our club on the map and that’s what we’ve done by winning this. We’re tucked away in North Cornwall and not many people know about us.”
Arnold, 63, is a carpenter who lives near Padstow and plays off a handicap of 1.
The captain added: “As for the round, Richard played very well - I chipped in when needed and it was all hunky-dory.
“This will get us noticed as a club. But personally, I’ve never been to Turkey before so that’ll be interesting for me.”
O’Hanlon moved to Cornwall from Staffordshire and once had European Tour player Robert Rock as his assistant. He said: “I’ve never had a sniff of getting to this final before.
“But I think we have a great chance as I play on a regular basis and have taken part in European Tour events.
“We knew we had to get our finger out on the back nine if we were going to win. We needed to get down in two on the 18th hole and that’s what we did.”
