Two former Ryder Cup team mates starred at Brocton Hall in a closely fought pro-am event just a month before the big event at Gleneagles.
Paul Broadhurst (Northants County) emerged as the victor, his four-under-par 67 was built around a flawless front nine of 31, he fired five birdies in total with just one dropped shot at the 15th.
Keeping him company for the majority of the round was David Gilford. Broadhurst's team mate at Kiawah Island in 1991 went a shot lower with a first half 30 only to fade with two bogeys on the back nine which left him two adrift on 67.
Gilford (Trentham Park) shared the runners up spot with Chris Freeman (Henley) who birdied the last to join him and money list leader Paul Streeter (Lincoln Golf Centre), four others also impressed with 68s on the traditionally difficult Staffordshire track.
In total 41 teams, one of the best turn outs of the year, took part. Broadhurst was also successful in the fourball event, leading his team to a 119 total, but having to share the spoils with Matthew Southwell and his playing partners from the neighbouring Chase Golf Club.
