James Scade (above) shot a sizzling six-under-par 64 to win the Colchester Golf Club Pro-Am to complete a brilliant three days at the North Essex club.
Just 24 hours after Rob Leonard’s superb performance to win the Weston Homes plc Colchester GC Classic, Scade (Ingrebourne Links Golf Complex) recorded a flawless card of four birdies and an eagle to win by one as part of a magnificent field of 49 teams.
He edged out Nicholas Pateman (Pinner Hill) and Darren Bragg (North London Golf Academy) to follow up a creditable tied 16th finish in the preceding Order of Merit event.
It was another big victory for Scade, who last year landed the PGA in England (East) Trainees Championship.
He teed off at the 11th and made steady early progress, picking up two birdies through his opening nine holes.
But an eagle at the second – his tenth – served as a springboard for a fine inward that saw him also pick up shots at the seventh and ninth.
Pateman looked as if he would at least match Scade after a stunning front nine that included four straight birdies from the second.
Indeed, he was seven-under with two holes to play but bogeyed them both to drop back into second spot where he was later joined by Bragg.
The Colchester GC Pro-Am, with its main sponsors Knight Group and Poundfield Products, is always a highlight on the schedule of the PGA in England (East) region and it was won by the team led by Chase Davis (Stapleford Abbotts). The quartet recorded a tally of 121, four better than Stuart Brown’s (Orton Meadows).
It was the fourth successive year that the Pro-Am – which raised funds for the St Helena Hospice – has been ably organised by Colchester member Hilary Persent and his team.
Hilary is extremely grateful to Keith Chinnery and his green-keeping team and Course Committee chairman Trevor Cock. Hilary and fellow Pro-Am organiser Bill Anslow are very appreciative of the efforts of the sponsors, volunteers and staff who helped to make this year's event such a success.
