Scott and Moody claim Inter-County Championship title

05/10/2023

Lewis Scott (Lee-on-The-Solent Golf Club) and Ryan Moody (Blackmoor Golf Club), representing their county - Hampshire - took the title of 2023 PGA Inter-County Champions with a superb score of 16-under-par over two days.

The Inter-County Championship, played at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club, brought together the best players in each county from this season, and the tournament saw the players complete one round of fourball play and one round of foursomes play.

After day one, Zak Morgan (Rochester & Cobham Golf Club) and Daniel Brown (Sene Valley Golf Club), representing Kent, led the pack with a score of 12-under-par after their first round of fourball play.

However, day two proved trickier for the Kent pairing, and Scott and Moody managed to chase down the day one leaders. Speaking of their rounds, Moody said:

“In fourball yesterday, we played really solid - Lewis holed some fantastic putts and got it going really good - I came in on the back 9, it wasn’t my best day but Lewis carried me - I think we’d agree on that, and today it was just really solid, we didn’t put ourselves in any trouble at all, it was good all day, and we holed some nice putts.”

“Today, we were really solid off the tee - we made putts when we needed to and took advantage of the easier holes - it worked out nicely, we played really steady golf.”

Scott added: “Today, we were really solid off the tee - we made putts when we needed to and took advantage of the easier holes - it worked out nicely, we played really steady golf.”

Scott and Moody play together often, both in the PGA South Region tournaments and casually, which worked out well for them in this pairs format, as Scott explains:

“We play quite a lot of golf together anyway even in casual rounds - sometimes we play betterball so we’ve played that together before - foursomes we don’t really play so often, it’s kind of a rarity, but we’re both fairly steady players, we both chip and putt well, so we thought, as long as we keep the ball in play and make a few putts, we’ll go from there, and that’s exactly what we did.”

Moody and Scott were thrilled to claim the Dave Thomas Trophy, with Scott saying:

“This is our first time playing it as a pair, but there’s some great golfers here - it’s the best in English and Welsh golf coming together to play, and looking at the scores, that’s a reflection of the quality of golf - there’s some great players out there so for us to go home with the trophy, we couldn’t be happier.”
