Andy Shakespear hopes Ely City Golf Club will be kind to him again as he looks to seal a place in his second PGA final in as many weeks.
The Warren Golf Club Assistant tees off in the English PGA Championship qualifying event at the Cambridgeshire venue on June 5.
That comes hot on the heels of his performance at Ely in the PGA Assistants’ Championship which saw him come third and qualify for the final of that tournament.
Now Shakespear is set to return in a bid to book a place in he
English PGA Championship final which is being held at Saunton Golf Club in Devon between 27-29 June.
It is a competition has been revived this year after an eight year gap.
And former EuroPro Tour player Shakespear says he will be happy for the chance to keep his form going as he sets his sights on another qualification.
“I’m not setting any expectations but it’s be good to get through to another final and I’m looking forward to it, I’m happy to go back to Ely after playing there only recently,” he said.
“It is a difficult course as there’s nothing to stop the wind coming in so it can be really blowy.
“That’s why the scoring was so high in the Assistants’ event.
“But I like the feel of the course, I’ve had a good look at it now and know when to attack and when to be cautious.”
Shakespear says he plans to concentrate on playing now that he has completed his PGA Assistants’ studies.
“I was on the EuroPro Tour for about four years, the standard gets better every year and the venues have improved a lot,” he said.
“I took the PGA course to give me other options in my career. It means I can feel comfortable and do anything in the industry. I’m really pleased in the industry.”
