Craig Shave has described winning the 2018 PGA National Pro-Am Championship as the ‘highlight of his career’ and is urging fellow pros and golf clubs to enter this year’s event.
Europe’s largest pro-am returns after a two-year hiatus giving thousands of golfers the opportunity to qualify for the golfing experience of a lifetime.
Shave won the 2018 Championship representing Whetstone Golf Club alongside his amateur partner Phil Wright. The pair were crowned ‘National Pro-Am Champions’ at Portugal’s Pestana Vila Sol Golf & Resort Hotel.
Reflecting back on the victory, Shave commented: “Winning the 2018 PGA National Pro-Am Championship was a highlight of my career and to achieve this with one of our members at Whetstone Golf Club is extra special.
“I entered the tournament because it’s a great way to interact with our members and it’s something extra special for them to play for. Having a chance to represent your club on a national stage is fantastic.
“The grand final was an amazing experience. We were looked after exceptionally PGA staff who were all very friendly and welcoming and as usual, they ran the event impeccably.
“To win the event for Whetstone meant a great deal. We are a friendly, family-run club that supports and follows its members/professionals in all competitions, so when we won this event in 2018 the club was buzzing.
“I would encourage every PGA Professional/club to enter this event because if you are lucky enough to qualify for the Grand Final, the memories will last a lifetime.”
Phil Wright, Shave’s amateur partner from 2018, added: “Playing in the PGA National Pro-Am Championship, from the qualifying round through to the Grand Final, was a fantastic experience.
“Meeting and getting to know the other competitors was great and playing golf with professional golfers, seeing how the game can be played, was a brilliant experience.
“The courses we played were stunning the PGA staff took care of everything, which made the whole experience feel like a holiday rather than a competition.”
The PGA National Pro-Am Championship is Europe’s largest pro-am and sees both male and female amateurs aged 18 or over compete for the title of ‘National Pro-Am Champions’.
Its 36-hole Grand Final will be staged at The PGA National Turkey in November and feature a dozen pairs who have qualified via one of 12 regional tournaments held across the UK and Ireland.
PGA Professionals will be competing for a share of the £25,000 prize fund and there are also highly coveted prizes for amateurs at both Regional and Grand Final stages of the tournament.
