Paul Sherman (Langley Park) has walked away with the £800 winner’s cheque after shooting a seven-under-par 64 to win the Littlestone Charity Pro-Am.
With just one little slip at the 16th, Sherman unleashed six birdies in the first 12 holes and topped the lot with an eagle at the final hole.
“I shot a new course record 63 in The PGA in Kent Championship last year,” he said, “so I came here in a very positive frame of mind.”
“I’ve had quite a good year as well, with four wins and several other top ten finishes, but it’s great to shoot my lowest score of the season at one of my favourite courses.”
Sherman’s performance left the 68 of former Virgin Atlantic PGA South Order of Merit champion Richard Wallis well off the mark in second place with a cheque for £650, while local hero Charlie Wilson shot 69 for third spot and £500.
Sherman opened with a birdie and never looked back. Two more at the fourth and the ninth put him on three-under at the turn, and he then fired off three in a row at the 10th, 11th and 12th to reach six-under. The bogey at the 16th was more than repaired with a stunning eagle at the last hole, capping Sherman’s lowest round this season.
“The course was in terrific condition, and given all the rain we’ve had recently, playing on a fast firm links course in great weather for the time of year was an absolute joy,” he added.
Wallis, who is in the process of building up his coaching business at Canterbury GC, led his amateur team to victory by two points, adding to his day’s takings.
“I was happy enough with the way I played, and Littlestone laid on really good event for us as usual, but Paul’s score really added some sparkle to a great tournament!”
