Six players shot two-under-par 68 to share top spot in the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Pro Am at Weston-super-Mare on a bright but relatively calm October day beside the sea.

G&S PGA chairman Andrew March (Brean) set the early pace with four birdies and an eagle but he was then joined at regular intervals throughout the day.

Windmill Golf Academy assistant Louis Boston and Henbury assistant Paul Ryder notched their first victories. Experienced David Dixon (Enmore Park) matched the best score and so did Scott Thompson (Mendip Spring) following his first professional win in the medal at Brean the previous week.

They were then joined by last year’s Pro Am winner Phillip Price. The Newport-based former Ryder Cup player would have won outright but for a triple bogey eight at the 17th.

G&S PGA captain Nick Ellis (Naunton Downs) also beat par but only by one and on any normal day he would be expecting to be celebrating a slightly higher finish than seventh.

Price did guide home the winning team with a score of 90 points, backed by Phil Coleman, Stuart Coleman and Josh Martin. Dixon’s regular team of James Symons, Jon Ball and Steve Lowe claimed second on 88 with a better back nine than Ryder’s side of Ken Warner, Richard Morfoot and Mike Heaven.
