A PGA Professional whose unique business takes golf into the gardens and offices of time-starved Londoners is set to prove his own playing abilities in the Titleist & FootJoy PGA Professional Championship.
Luke Willett, 30, runs a mobile studio which ensures golf-mad residents of the capital can work on their swing without heading out of the city.
And Willett, former head professional at Burhill Golf Club, is keen to ensure he stays on top of his own game too, with the PGA Professional Championship qualifier at Lambourne on May 21 his first competitive outing of 2015.
Should he finish among the frontrunners Willett, from Gerrards Cross in Buckinghamshire, will land himself a place in the £91,500 championship final at Burnham & Berrow on June 2-5.
There he will have the opportunity to qualify for the GB&I PGA Cup team to face the United States at CordeValle, California, in September.
“It’s important that as a professional golfer you continue to play and perform to a high level,” he affirmed.
“Even though I’m spending more and more time on the business I want to make sure I’m making time to get out on the golf course too - this event is a great one to be a part of.
“It’s a release to play competitively and no matter how busy I get with everything else, I will never completely give up on the playing side of the game.
“I’m looking forward to going back to Lambourne too. It’s somewhere I have played before but not in a long time – it’ll be great to go back.”
Willett admitted forming his business, which utilises a small net, mat, and various pieces of golfing technology including launch monitors and video software, has helped reinvigorate his passion for coaching.
“I can now go out and meet all sorts of people who for whatever reason find it hard to get to a golf facility and make it possible for them to have a lesson,” he said.
“I can set up in 10 minutes and deliver a lesson using much of the same technology you would find at a regular facility.
“I don’t think it works in isolation – it’s still important that people make time to visit a golf course, but it just makes it that little bit easier to get some quick practice in.
“The possibilities are endless and I really want to see how far we can take it. Could you imagine, for example, giving a golf lesson on a pleasure boat on the Thames?!”
Other players competing at the Lambourne regional qualifier include: Chris Baron (West Essex), Lee Jackson (North Oxford), Cennydd Mills (Ridgeway), Scott Marshall and Laurence Marriott (both Lambourne).
In addition to a £10,000 first prize, Peugeot are providing the winner with the use of a top of the range 308GT for a year.
