Slade Valley Golf Club has become the first of 300-plus hopefuls to qualify for this year’s final of the Staysure PGA Trophy.
The club, represented by its head PGA Professional John Dignam, who scored two birdies and an eagle on the final three holes, and his amateur partner Owen Cassidy, won the Staysure PGA Trophy’s Irish Regional Final at Seapoint Links near Dublin.
They were one of three teams to finish on 69 points alongside host Seapoint and Wexford Golf Club, but the Slade Valley duo progressed to the Grand Final, to be staged at the London Golf Club near Sevenoaks, Kent, on July 30 and 31, after winning on a card countback.
The Staysure PGA Trophy, which features senior amateur players partnered with a PGA Professional of any age, is sponsored by Staysure, the insurance specialists for over 50s, and is now in its second year. It carries a £30,000 prize fund for PGA Professionals, with £7,500 going to the winner, while amateurs compete for an expenses-paid VIP experience at the Grand Final at the London Golf Club.
Duos from more than 300 clubs have entered this year’s tournament and Dignam and Cassidy will be joined at the London Club by the winners of the six other Regional Finals.
