Leading PGA Professionals in the south west and South Wales will travel to Cornwall to help St Mellion celebrate the golf resort’s 40th anniversary.
“It promises to be a memorable day,” said the club’s golf manager David Moon who has been arranging a series of events to mark the occasion, including a special pro-am on July 12.
“The 40 years have gone in the blink of an eye and it has great for us to have hosted six Benson and Hedges Championships, the PGA Cup in 1978 and the Women’s’ British Open among other important events.”
Many golfing superstars graced the course during the Benson & Hedges tournaments between 1990 and 1995 played over Europe’s first golf course built by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer and Jose Maria Olazabal were among the winners.
The Yamaha Golf Company and St Austell Brewery are also giving support with the latter bringing their vintage wagon and will run a free bar during the day.
Applications to enter the pro-am, priced at £295 for a team of three amateurs and a professional, are now being received. Moon expects an entry of between 30 and 40 teams.
He said: “This is a great opportunity to take part in a team competition and play the outstanding Nicklaus course. It only measures just over 6,200 yards off the day tees yet it requires careful shot-making.”
The anniversary celebrations feature a number of club competitions and festivities starting with An Audience with Peter Alliss on Friday April 29.
More than 200 tickets have already been bought by members and friends keen to hear anecdotes and reminiscences from the 85-year-old Voice of Golf. The same day 33 teams will play a Texas scramble over the Nicklaus Course.
Moon concluded: "Having a true golfing legend in Peter Alliss here at St Mellion is an absolute privilege, and I know the members are really looking forward to the day. Although the golf event is full, golf club members from across the south west are most welcome to attend the evening and be a part of our 40th celebrations."
