Statement - further Clarification of golf in Ireland

15/05/2020

The PGA has been in communication with the Irish Government through Sport Ireland, who offer the following advice, relating specifically to Coaching, Club fitting and Driving Ranges during Phase 1 of the lifting of restrictions commencing on 18 May.

Coaching

Government Guidelines state that, “People can exercise - either on their own or in a group of no more than 4 people - where social distancing can be maintained and where there is no contact with other people”.  With reference to this guideline it is advised that golf coaching on a one to one basis or in groups up to 4 people can commence outside, if social distancing and infection control measures are in place. It is recommended that PGA professionals complete a comprehensive risk assessment and refer to the coaching guidelines on the PGA Covid-19-resource-hub to ensure maximum compliance.

Club fitting

Like Coaching, it is advised that Club Fitting can commence outside, however you must be able to complete the entirety of the activity under social distancing and infection control measures.  One again, it is recommended that PGA professionals complete a comprehensive risk assessment to ensure maximum safety.

Driving ranges

The Government of Ireland document Roadmap to Re-opening Society and Business states that “people are permitted to engage in outdoor sporting and fitness activities. Sport Ireland interpret covered golf driving ranges to be indoor facilities and therefore advise that they remain closed at this juncture.

Retail

Pro Shops can open for check in purposes only however outlets offering online sales and ‘click and collect’ are acceptable subject to adhering to the social distancing, infection control and employee safeguarding measures.
