Cardiff Golf Club duo Adam Constable and Steve Jones produced a blockbuster display to reach Golfplan Insurance PGA Pro Captain Challenge final in Turkey.
But they were one of the first pairings out - and after posting a formidable 12-under-par round of 59 they spent the rest of the day in the cinema!
Captain Jones and PGA Professional Constable beat the weather as their rivals faltered in the afternoon rain at Enville Golf Club in the West Midlands.
They will now play in the £25,000 showpiece final to be held at the PGA Sultan Course at Antalya Golf Club in Turkey between November 25-26.
The pair won by four shots ahead of Carl Edwards and Colin Berry of Cheshire’s Birchwood Golf and Luke Towler and John Gregory from Telford Golf & Country Club.
But as they were miles from home, Jones and Constable were forced to wait hours to have their victory confirmed at the Stourbridge venue.
“We went to the pictures to kill time,” smiled Jones, aged 59 and a director at a property company.
“'Vacation' was showing, one of the National Lampoon films.
“When we came out, we saw the rain and Adam guessed no-one would have beaten our score.”
Cardiff-based Jones admitted he was able to play his part with Constable dominating.
“Adam started like he was on fire, I was in awe of it and that put a bit of pressure on me, but that was healthy,” said the nine handicapper.
“I’ve not been playing badly though this season, I’ve got my handicap down and I’ve had a bit of a purple patch which carried on here.”
Constable now has a busy winter lined up now that he has booked Cardiff’s place in Turkey.
“I’m playing out in Bulgaria as well as being on the Wales team for the European Championships,” he said.
“But myself and Steve gelled well and made seven birdies on the front nine.
“We also birdied the first five of those holes. We got a little bit static for a while but we made three more birdies in a row followed by an eagle. But I’ve played these events before and I had a pretty good idea of what was a winning score, I didn’t think we’d be beaten.
“I think it’s fair to say we benefitted from the better weather earlier in the day.”
