Scott Stevens shot a magnificent three-under-par 65 around Wentworth’s East Course to claim victory in the second Titleist & FootJoy PGA in England (South) Winter Series event.

As the only one to break par, Stevens’ performance outshone the strong field.

In second place with a useful level-par was Reigate Heath’s Lewis Parker. Despite being two-over after the 13th, Parker made birdies at the 14th and 15th to repair the damage and edge out Ben Daniels (Horton Park) into third spot.

As the leading assistant, Daniels picked up the much sought after Titleist & FootJoy ball, glove and shoe contract for the next 12 months.

Playing the East course for the first time, Stevens, head professional at Staplehurst Golf Centre in Kent, made a fast start with a birdie at the second and went on to make three more at the fifth, sixth and ninth to reach three-under-par at the turn.

“I partnered Michael Lowe (Leatherhead) who’d played here as an amateur for a few years, and he said I’d need to make the birdies on the front nine, as there were some tough holes coming back,” he explained.

“I was hitting the ball nicely, and only missed a couple of fairways, but as Michael predicted I made the score on the front nine with four birdies, making the one mistake of mis-clubbing on the eighth for a bogey. I had chances for more on the back nine, but did well with a couple of good up and downs to par all the holes home.”

“With a new baby son arriving I haven’t played much for the past couple of years, but I’ve had a couple of sessions with PGA Professional coach Alan Barber this year – the first time I’ve had any lessons for a very long time! – It got me back to the standard I need to achieve. Converting all that into a win here is just the encouragement I need.”

“My goal is to keep up the work rate over winter, and then compete in a lot more of the regional events and the Order of Merit tournaments, aiming for a top 10 or five placing, along with some overseas pro-ams. Mainly, it’s about getting back to the kind of level I used to play at, along with all the coaching commitments at Staplehurst, and enjoy doing it!”
