Stirling makes it a treble at Glasson WPGA

Heather Stirling made it a treble at the first WPGA Series event of the season at Glasson as she added the stroke play title to the individual and team crowns she won earlier in the week at the Pro-Am.

The Scottish golfer carded a one-under 71 in torrential rain all day to win by a shot from Marie Martindale of Hampstead Golf Club in England.

“It feels great, I’m delighted,” said Stirling who carded three birdies and a brace of bogeys to claim the £700 first prize.

On Monday, Stirling carded a three-under 69 to win the individual prize in the pre-tournament Pro-Am while her team also scooped the stableford prize with 91 points.

Stirling had to battle some really difficult weather conditions with trying to stay dry, a huge task as biblical rain lashed down.

“I just tried to stay in the moment and go through my pre-shot routine and try to execute every shot and concentrate. I played pretty solid, I left a few shots out there I could have been four or five under, but I did well.

“It’s been a fantastic couple of days. I love playing in the Pro-Am, the ladies were great fun out there and we have a great time.

“Lynn has done a tremendous job, all the work that Lynn has put in, I think it’s the best event on the WPGA Series. She put in such hard work and it’s been a great event.

“It’s beautiful out there, I really like it here and I played last year and was delighted to come back again.”

Glasson Lakehouse Director of Golf, Lynn McCool,also played in the event and she was delighted with how the two days ran despite the weather on Tuesday.

A fantastic couple of days was kicked off by a PING demo day at the driving range which was packed out with the amateurs before the professionals gave a clinic ahead of the Pro-Am.

“It was brilliant - the time Alison Nicholas and Sue Dickens gave this morning to the amateurs was fantastic and it’s really important to give something back to the amateurs. It was entertaining and very informative. To get that information really adds to the occasion,” said McCool.

“Just before that we had the PING demo day which was packed out! A great morning for all the golfers.”

On Monday night the well-known broadcaster Shane O’Donoghue was on the mic for the Q&A session with some of the professionals while all the teams were treated to some fantastic street food before the pro-only event on Tuesday morning.

“It was a shame about the weather today but the course held up really well and the greens were fabulous, so we were lucky no water was gathering!”

McCool has put her heart and soul into getting a WPGA event to Glasson Golf Club

“I’m really proud because we have had huge investment into Glasson Lakehouse. I was very keen to get people here again, obviously being on the WPGA committee we want to keep driving the game and women’s sport.

“We have a number of pros in Ireland and many came over from the UK and Scotland so we had so much fun.”

The WPGA Series in Glasson was the first of nine events in what is already set to be a ground-breaking season.

The WPGA Series will conclude its season at the prestigious Royal Troon, the esteemed venue for this year's Open Championship.

WPGA Members are presented with a unique opportunity to grace the renowned Old Course just months after the Open Championship is played this July.
