Gary Stubbington went on a fitness kick in the winter and it paid dividends at the Be Wiser Insurance PGA in Hampshire Masters, writes Ken Gaunt.

The county chairman chalked up a one-shot victory at South Winchester Golf Club with a level par total of 144. Despite the tough conditions, the Hockley pro’s game improved in the afternoon and he made up four shots on his opening 74.

That saw him edge out Chris Blunden (Sandford Springs) and Martin Adams (Swanmore Golf Centre) who finished tied second. It also means the trophy returns to the Stubbington family after a gap of five years, his youngest son Jack winning the event in 2014.

Stubbington said: “To follow Jack in winning the Masters is very pleasing as some of these young lads hit it miles. It was a long day but with experience you find a way of getting the ball in the hole as quickly as you can.

He continued: “I felt strong and working on my fitness with a club member in the winter has certainly helped me. I was also going to the gym two or three times a week.”

Secretary of The PGA in Hampshire Roger Tuddenham added: “We set the course up off the back tees which made it over 7,000 yards. Gary was the senior pro in the field so it was quite a win over the young ones!”
