Trick shot specialist Paul Barrington – known as “The Striker” - showed he can still produce some excellent conventional golf as he won his first Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal of the winter series at Wells Golf Club.
Making his first playing return to the club since his junior days a one-under-par 69 gave him a one stroke advantage over regular winners Ross Langdon (Brickhampton Court) and Giuseppe Licata (Chipping Sodbury).
On a bright but still chilly day InPlay Golf professional Barrington started slowly with two dropped shots in his opening four holes. Some excellent iron play helped him make five birdies at the seventh, eighth, 12th, 13th and 15th.
Two late bogeys, including one at the home hole, did not matter as he climbed into sixth spot on the Total Triumph Order of Merit.
Once again the two OOM leaders could not be separated so Langdon maintained his 28-point advantage of the Bristol-based Italian. Langdon’s more erratic round contained four birdies and four bogeys. But Licata was a par machine, making 16 with just one birdie offset by a solitary bogey.
Ed Goodwin (Cirencester), George Ryall (Players Club) and G&S PGA captain Robin Goodey (Chipping Sodbury) shared fourth on 72. Goodey was on course for victory until a seven at the short but tight par four 14th hole derailed his charge.
