After 36 holes of better ball play, Daryl St John-Jones (Oakmere Park Golf Club) and his amateur partner, Colin Walkden, secured the Super 60s title with a score of 84 points whilst PGA Professional Mike Gallagher, and his brother John, triumphed in the Superb 70s category.
The tournament, held at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa and open to PGA Professionals and amateurs aged 60 years and over, attracted players from all corners of the UK.
St John-Jones and Walkden were thrilled to finish in first, having played together in the tournament twice previously. St John-Jones said: “The last two years, we've finished about tenth, so for us to win is fantastic. We had a great score on day one, we were on fire! We had 47 points, which is unheard of. Not so good on the second day, but luckily we got over the line. It was going to be a quiet journey on the way home if we hadn’t won!”
Walkden added: “Myself and Daryl, we travel and play together a lot - we’ve been to Turkey, Portugal, Spain… It’s good fun playing with him!”
St John-Jones and Walkden were closely followed by Gary Brown (Ganton Golf Club) & Graham Cook, Charles Giddins & Avi Da Silva, and Steve Marr (Withington Golf Club) & Kevan Hawkins, all finishing on 83 points. Thanks to a second round 42, Brown & Cook took second position, with Giddins & Da Silva taking third.
Host venue, Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa, was popular amongst the players and Director of Golf, David Goscombe, said: “It's been fantastic, a real honour to have so many great guys here enjoying the course, we've had some really good feedback, everyone seems to have enjoyed it and we're looking forward to hopefully having it here again in the future.”
