David Salisbury recorded a first success on The PGA in England (East) tournament schedule, thanks to a stunning round of 63 on Captain’s Day (sponsored by Lynx Golf) at Bishop’s Stortford.

Salisbury’s first season as a regular in the region had seen him finish second on three occasions as well as a couple of other near-misses.

But when it came, his breakthrough victory was an emphatic one as he mastered breezy and, at times, very wet conditions in shooting eight-under-par – no less than six shots better than runner-up Glen Portelli (Verulam).

Under shotgun start conditions, Salisbury – who is to continue his PGA traineeship at Three Rivers in Essex – began with a birdie at the 12th.

That was to be the first of the eight he notched up and he also kept bogies off his card in racing to a splendid victory.

Salisbury said: “The plan was to finish the season with a win so that I can move on next year, so I’m pleased to have done that.

“It’s nice to win and nice, too, to shoot a score that reflects what I can do. Hopefully next year I can do it a little bit more often. I played solidly, got my distance control right and just let the putter flow.”

Second-placed Portelli’s 68 left him one clear of Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs) and Sean Whiffin (Hertfordshire G&CC) who tied for third. Mark Baker (Colchester) led the winning team.
