Steve Surry will take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s GRENKE Championship on his home course, Cumberwell Park.
The experienced player, a winner on the Europro in 2009, carded a second-round 70 for one-under-par to move his tournament score to seven-under, one ahead of Darren Wright, who signed for 67 on day two. Marcus Armitage (Howley Hall Golf Club) is third on five-under.
Wright (Golf at Goodwood) won his first Europro title at Burhill three weeks ago and carded six birdies on the back nine of Cumberwell Park’s Red/Yellow combination, having started on the tenth tee. He dropped two shots coming in but is still in prime position to steal Surry’s home glory.
Surry also began his second round on the tenth and extended his overnight lead with birdies at 11 and 12 before being pegged back at 13. Another break of par at the 14th was followed by a second bogey, this time at 16, and from there he played the remaining eleven holes to claim a 70 on the par-71 layout.
“I will approach it the same way as I have the last two days,” said Surry of the final round. “I know the course and that is an advantage but there is a bit of extra pressure. Yes, it is my home course but I have won on the EuroPro before so know what it's about.
“My putting wasn't quite what it could have been today but it was still a good round. Looking at the scores there's some good players up there and it should be a very interesting day tomorrow.”
The GRENKE Championship carries a £50,000 prize fund with £10,000 going to the winner. Among the four players tied four is Phillip Kelly (Coastal Property Group, Lytham), who carded a second-round 65 to come in from three over to four under with 18 holes to play.
