George Woolgar capitalised on a late slip by overnight leader Colm Moriarty to take a one-stroke victory in the Sweetspot Classic at Longhirst Hall in Northumberland.
Moriarty bogeyed the last two holes for a two-over-par 72 which left him tied with Paul Maddy and Zack Saltman.
Maddy carded a brilliant 64 to surge into contention but Woolgar’s two-under-par 68 left him at seven under for the 54-hole tournament and with the winner’s cheque of £10,000.
Woolgar was also victorious at Frilford Heath last year but had been dogged by injury since, only returning to action in May.
“It was a long nine months after winning at Frilford last summer,” he said. “It was a bit of a rollercoaster but that is in the past now and I have come back, been consistent and now I want to kick on from here and let’s see what happens.
“I didn’t see a leaderboard after the 15th so I didn’t know my position, but I knew I needed to press on and try and get some birdies on the last couple of holes. That didn’t quite happen but the pars were a good score in the end and I won and got the job done.”
Woolgar was consistent all week, with rounds of 67, 68 and 68 earning him a brand new Motocaddy trolley in addition to the first prize cheque.
With only two cuts missed all season, and a tied second at Collingtree Park in June, Woolgar now leads the Order of Merit.
A two-hour highlights package of the Sweetspot Classic will air on Sky Sports HD on Tuesday, August 27, repeated three times on Wednesday, August 28.
