Taverner

James Taverner (Hendon) set a new course record at Garon Park with a sizzling seven-under par 63 to win the Essex club’s pro-am.

Taverner played a flawless round of golf, carding seven birdies as he triumphed by three shots from Paul Hetherington (Great Hadham Golf and Country Club).

Teeing off at the 10th, he made the perfect start by picking up a stroke at his first two holes – both par-4s.

He remained firmly on the birdie trail with further gains at his fourth and ninth to turn in 31.

Taverner then made a two at the short third – his 12th – before signing off in style with a birdie brace at eight and nine.

Hetherington, too, didn’t drop a shot in his fine four-under 66 that left him three ahead of Chris Grant (Garon Park) and James Scade (Little Channels) who tied for third.

Home PGA professional Grant led the winning team on a tally of 124 – five clear.
