Terry aces Assistants’ Challenge

Andrew Terry won his first professional tournament in sensational style - with an ace at the second play-off hole.

He achieved the feat in the PGA North Assistants' Challenge at Durham club Rockliffe Hall, stunning opponent Richard Robson-Crosby after the pair had tied on two-under-par 70 in normal time.

And Terry admitted he felt sorry for his adversary from Ponteland.

"His ball landed safely on the green and I followed with a seven iron shot which bounced twice then disappeared into the cup," said the 29-year-old, who coaches at Rochdale club Marland.

“It's hard to sink in. I hit a six iron when we first played the hole which was a bit too long but although I got down in two I dropped down a club in the play-off."

He reeled off an eagle and six birdies in his 70 but three putts on the final green cost him outright victory as Robson-Crosby birdied two of the last three.

Terry, who scored his first ace in 2003 as an amateur at Heaton Park in his native Manchester, has no plans to play at a higher level.

"This standard will do me," he said. "It's great to get my first win under my belt although I've won a few pro-ams and other assorted events over the years."
