Here Sue Shapcott (PGA Professional) explains how her latest course on The Coach-Athlete Relationship from The Coach Learning Group will help you to connect better with your players.

Have you ever wondered what your clients are looking for in a coach? Have you ever asked them? Beyond assumed technical knowledge, are you providing players you coach with the social connection they are seeking? The relationships we build with golfers is often undervalued compared to the perceived value of technical expertise. However, this could be a mistake.

As Sophia Jowett, an expert in the field states,

"The coach–athlete relationship is not an add-on to, or by-product of, the coaching process, nor is it based on the athlete’s performance, age or gender – instead it is the foundation of coaching."

Other research has demonstrated that when players feel a connection to their coaches they are more likely to keep playing golf.

In our online Coach-Athlete Relationship for Golf Coaches course, we explore what recreational golfers say they are looking for in their golf coach. Spoiler alert: Technical knowledge does not feature highly! The course material challenges you to consider if your coaching style is fulfilling the needs of players you teach. It will make you reflect on how you may better connect with golfers and subsequently retain them as clients.

Please note, any PGA Professional who completes the Coach-Athlete Relationship online course will be awarded 15 CPD Points as part of The PGA's Member Education Programme.
