Three-way tie at the top at Tewkesbury Park

Three-way tie at the top at Tewkesbury Park

19/08/2024

The WPGA Series’ latest event took place at Tewkesbury Park in Gloucestershire, where Heather Stirling (Get Golfing CIO), Ali Gray (Ormskirk Golf Club) and Natasha Gobey (Bryn Meadows Golf & Country Club) all finished tied for first place with scores of level par.

It was a game of two halves for Stirling, who started with a double bogey on the first, but fought back on the back nine with three birdies and an eagle.

Stirling said: “I loved the course. It was a bit breezy out there - just like Scotland. The greens were superb, the course was in great condition and it was great to play with Ali and Suzanne. I was just hitting it all over the place on the front nine and on the back nine it was like I couldn't have a bad shot!”

Stirling is certainly on form at the moment - out of the four WPGA Series events so far in 2024, she has finished first twice, alongside a second and third place finish.

Gobey, having only returned to competitive tournament play after six years at the last WPGA Series event at Redditch Golf Club, was thrilled with her performance: “I played really solid tee to green and my putting was really good. I had a lovely playing partner, Heidi, so she helped me stay relaxed for the round. It was quite tough - the wind picked up through the day, so you had to think a little bit more about your shots and how you were going to play it into the green. The course was in really nice condition, just a little bit unpredictable with the bounces sometimes.

“It's my second professional event in about six years, coming back from injury, so I was just putting feelers out there to see where I stand competitively. I played in the last one and finished 17th - I just wanted to improve on that today, so to go out and finish tied first is nice, I’m really chuffed.”

The tournament results from Tewkesbury Park also provided confirmation of two additional members of Cathy Panton-Lewis’ 2024 Great Britain & Ireland WPGA Cup team. Ali Gray and Marie Martindale (Hampstead Golf Club) will head to Oregon in October to take on teams from the USA, Sweden, South Africa, Australia and Canada.

Gray said: “I'm absolutely thrilled to be back in the team again this year. We're going to have a fantastic time, we've got a great team, an amazing captain and we're going to do our best and bring back the trophy for Great Britain and Ireland.”
