The month-old pairing of Stuart Brown and Ian Ellis combined to win the Golfbreaks.com PGA Fourball Championship at Bush Hill Park Golf Club.

Brown (pictured on right), of Orton Meadows Golf Club in Peterborough and Ellis, from Norfolk’s Costessey Park Golf Club (left), carded an impressive 10-under-par round of 60.

But they could only tie with long-time leaders and former champions Andrew Pestell representing Chelmsford and new Channels head PGA Professional Jason Levermore.

Brown and Ellis won on countback with Lee Shepherd (J Letters Golf Academy) and Christopher Clarke (Direct Golf UK) two shots back in third place.

The pair will be joined by six other qualifiers at the £28,750 final, supported by BMW, which will be held at Forest Pines Hotel and Golf Resort on Lincolnshire on October 2-4.

Brown revealed that the winning pair had not been together long but quickly forged a good partnership.

He said: “This is the first time we’ve got to the final as a team. I spoke to Ian about a month ago and asked him if he wanted to join up for this event and he agreed so to play as well as we did and qualify for the final was great.”

But they needed a storming finish to make sure of winning the event at the death.

Brown added: “We were three-under for the front nine, but we were on fire after that to finish on 10-under.

“I think our back nine was virtually identical to Pestell and Levermore’s, but we got a birdie on the 18th and that’s what gave us the edge in the end I think.

“But we like this format of golf as there’s not so much pressure on.

“And it gives us an October final which we’re really looking forward to now.”

Leading golf holiday firm, Golfbreaks.com is in the first of a three year sponsorship of the popular tournament as it bids to strengthen its ties with PGA Professionals and in addition has become a PGA Partner.
