Top marks for qualifier Gurry

09/04/2014

James Gurry (GurryGolf.com) bagged three birdies in the closing six holes to emerge as the leading qualifier for the Weston Homes plc Colchester Classic.

Gurry’s hot finish allowed him to sign for a two-under-par 69 at Enfield Golf Club where a total of 30 players earned their spot for July 23-24’s Order of Merit event.

The Basildon-based golfer bogeyed the opening hole, but put that setback behind him with birdie-twos at the 6th and 10th.

The par-four 12th played the toughest hole on the day and Gurry dropped two shots to the card there. However, that seemed only to spur him on as he bounced back with a birdie at the next before also picking up shots at the 16th and 18th.

Charlie Luther (Hertfordshire G&CC) and Glyn Krause (Elton Furze) finished a stroke behind on one-under. Luther’s 70 showed that he remains in a rich vein of form after finishing tied-first and tied-second in the two previous Order of Merit event qualifiers.

Rhys Piper (Hartswood) and Paul Grotier (Essex G&CC) both shot respective 71s to share fourth on a day when the qualifying mark was five-over.
