Paul Toyer produced a spectacular round of golf to win first prize at the Leighton Buzzard Golf Club pro-am.

The St Neots director of golf and head professional was delighted with his performance, after carding a six-under-par round of 65.

He said: “I have been playing well all year but this was my best score for a long time. It has been coming.

“At one point I thought I was going to shoot really low, it was one of those days when everything was going right.

“I started at the 10th and had an eagle and a birdie on my first nine. I got to six-under-par before I dropped a shot but I pulled that back with another birdie.

“Because of my duties as director of golf at St Neots I don’t have much time to play. Pro-ams are more of a social thing for me these days and I think it helps to go out with few expectations.”

Mark Talbott, assistant at Thorpe Hall, had set the early pace with a round of three-under-par. He was four under on the 16th tee but ended bogey, birdie, bogey.

Three players were joint third. Joe Winfield of Abbey Hill Golf Centre at Milton Keynes, Daniel Coughlan of Wyke Green who won last week’s pro-am at Grim’s Dyke and veteran Tony Charnley, who has considerable experience on the PGA European Seniors Tour, were all two-under-par.

The only other player under par was the consistent Stuart Brown of Orton Meadows who took sixth place at one under. Daniel Poulter (Kartel Golf) had two eagles at the par five seventh and the 242-yard par-four 17th.

Chase Davis of Stapleford Abbotts inspired the winning team of Josh Banwell, Ollie Banwell and Tim Martin to an 18 under par score of 124. Toyer’s team of John Carruthers, Richard Dean and Gareth Dean was one shot behind.

Third place went to Ian Ellis (Costessey Park) with David Hawkins, Paul Anderson and Leighton Buzzard club captain Brian Carter with 127.
