Three players battled bravely at Naas to share top of the leaderboard in the Co Kildare club’s annual PGA Pro-Am tournament with Wayne O’Callaghan coming with a late surge in the evening to split the winner’s cheque with David Ryan and Glen Robinson.
O’Callaghan’s big hitting came into play as he birdied three long holes over the finishing run from 13th to the 18th. That gave the Fernhill pro a one-under-par 71 to share the spotlight with Ryan and Robinson. O’Callaghan was two-over before his late birdie burst.
Ryan was first to take control of the top of the leaderboard as he shot down an eagle three at the 15th hole for a back nine of one-under-par. He got off to a good start with birdie threes at the second and fourth but wiped those out with bogeys at five and nine.
In contrast, Robinson pencilled in bogey five at the first hole but steadied the ship with back-to-back birdies at six and seven. He was back to regulation with bogey six at 13 but got into the winning mix by trimming the long 15th to four blows.
