Two's company at The Bristol

Clevedon’s Ashley Mansell followed up winning the PGA West Region Order of Merit with a victory in his first outing in the Gloucestershire & Somerset PGA winter season at The Bristol.

Unlike his runaway success in the former, however, his playing partner, Somerset amateur Johnny Grace, occupied pole position with him.

Grace had the upper hand on the front nine, reaching the turn two shots clear of Mansell on four-under, but dropped three shots on the first five holes on the way home.

Mansell, by contrast, birdied the long par-three 11th to claim the lead and added another at the 15th to increase his advantage.

But his bogey at the 16th coupled with Grace recovering to birdie the 15th and 18th resulted in them posting three-under-par rounds of 67 to finish a shot ahead of Cirencester’s Mark Plummer.

David Dixon of Enmore Park was the only other member of the field to break par with a round of 69 while Burnham & Berrow’s Lee Corfield consolidated his position as Total Triumph Order of Merit leader with a round of one-over.
