Richard Wallis showed his liking for events organised by two PGA Regions by winning the PGA Southern Open Championship @ Paultons in Romsey, Hampshire.
The event was the second of the season that involved PGA South teaming up with another region.
Organised by the PGA’s South and South West regions, it followed the NHS London Open 2020 that was staged with the East.
But no matter the provenance of the events, Wallis has won them both.
His latest triumph differed from the first, however. Having tied-first with Paul Nessling in the former, Wallis had no one to keep him company in the winner’s enclosure at Paultons Golf Centre.
A birdie-laden and bogey-free eight-under-par round of 63 earned him 44 Stableford points, the £1,500 winner’s cheque, an additional £500 for finishing as the leading player from the PGA South region, and extended his lead in its Order of Merit.
Wallis is now more than 75 points clear of Jordan Godwin, his 2019 Great Britain and Ireland PGA Cup team-mate who finished a point behind and picked up £1,250.
Godwin, who has recently moved to the London Golf Performance Academy, was left to rue a bogey at the par-five ninth.
Meanwhile, Jacob Hunter of Broadstone Golf Club, Clevedon Golf Club’s Ashley Mansell and James Dick of Gloucester Golf Centre were the highest players from the West region. Each racked up 40 points to finish tied-fifth, with Hunter claiming the prize for the highest-placed PGA Assistant.
The competition for Seniors also went to a player from the West – Michael Watson from Wessex Golf Centre with 37 points and the Berkshire’s Catherine Panton-Lewis won the Ladies event with 34.
