Mathew Webb has completed a unique double after winning the PGA of Australia’s National Futures Championship at Ballarat Golf Club in Victoria.

The Bedlingtonshire Golf Club assistant, who won the Galvin Green PGA Assistants’ Championship back in August, clinched a four stroke victory in the weather-disrupted event.

With ferocious winds battering the course, particularly on the third day, Webb’s rounds of 74, 71 and 76 proved enough to land first prize in the $57,000 event and also earn entry into next year’s Australian PGA Championship.

But jet-setting Webb will have little time to reflect on his triumph as he jumps straight on to a plane to get back in time to tee up in the PGA Play-Offs at Saunton Golf Club on Monday (October 24).

The 27 year old makes his debut in the £15,000 Play-Offs event where a top ten finish will secure him a place in next year’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

He will be joined by PGA in England (North) Order of Merit top three Mark Pilkington (Pwllheli), Garry Houston (Carden Park) and Phil Archer (Birchwood).

Webb hopes jet lag won’t affect his performance in Devon.

“I have a few worries that it might take its toll at the Play-Offs in Saunton,” admitted Webb.

“But the Australia event was too good an opportunity to miss.

“I booked the flight I could realistically get which got me home the fastest and will hopefully fight off any jetlag.

“I arrive back on Saturday (October 22) at around 11am so I have one day to try and recover from it.”

Webb has enjoyed a breakthrough year having also landed Golfbreaks.com PGA Fourball Championship with Alex Belt in August.

In between juggling his PGA studies he has been working hard on his game with coach Andrew Nicholson, senior European director of instruction at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy at Wynyard Golf Club.

“This year has been a positive one, I’m currently hitting my goals from the start of the season,” added Webb.

“Me and my coach talk a lot about the mind and trying to figure out how to produce the better shots more often with a few swing things getting incorporated over time.

“We’ve not done much changing of the golf swing but more how to manage it.

“The Play-Offs is a great opportunity – it gives you a chance to play at a higher level and hopefully give yourself a chance of playing well on the big stage!”

Whatever happens on the course playing wise, Webb will certainly be looking the part having earned a Galvin Green contract to wear their gear next year.

“All my Galvin stuff has come through and it's beyond great. If I chose a brand to wear it would be Galvin Green as it is in my opinion the best!”
