Reigning European Senior Tour No 1 Paul Wesselingh briefly swapped his clubs for scissors as he officially opened the latest addition to the facilities at Ashbourne Golf Club.

Derbyshire-based Wesselingh, who has enjoyed two amazing seasons since joining the senior ranks, joined Ashbourne captain Bernard Bembridge in cutting the ribbon to the club’s brand new covered practice bays.

The six-time PGA Cup player and former Midlands No 1, added to the occasion with a short game clinic and a few tales of life on Tour.

PGA Professional Andrew Smith, who is also the club manager said: “We are delighted with the new practice bays. They have been some two years in the planning and we see them both as a benefit of membership but also as an opportunity to attract and retain new members.

“We have strong ties in the community with our coaching staff active in local schools delivering the Tri-Golf and Golf Extreme sessions.

“We support the Golf England ‘Get into Golf’ campaign and ‘Play in May’ and offer free adult and junior golf coaching. With funding from the Derbyshire County Golf Partnership, there will be more extensive, coaching programmes delivered by PGA Professionals.”
