The PGA in England (Midlands) regular James Whatley is recovering after completing a charity golfing challenge around his home course to raise awareness of breast cancer.
Just a day after competing in the 36-hole Glazerite Trophy, Whatley rose at first light to take on 100 holes at Morley Hayes accompanied by his friend and playing partner Richard Silk and a host of caddies working in shifts.
His cause was a deeply personal one as sister Janine is fighting a long term battle with breast cancer since 2010. Sadly her cancer is incurable, however she is receiving treatment which it is hoped will control the disease.
By completing his challenge Whatley raised awareness of both breast cancer and Maggie's Centres, vital cancer support facilities based outside NHS hospitals that offer free practical and emotional support to sufferers and their families.
Whatley and Silk's arduous day finished just as darkness set in and despite the after effects they both felt in the following days it was clearly a challenge that was worth the pain.
"My legs and knees definitely knew all about my 100 holes, yet between myself and Richard we have raised over £4,500 with donations still coming in,” said Whatley.
“I also managed to finish just four-over-par from the Championship tees.”
