Cennydd Mills eased out James Ruth to win the Dudsbury Masters pro-am by one shot after a remarkable late run of five birdies in the final seven holes to post four-under-par 67.
This run was the perfect prelude for the Ridgeway Golf Club player going into the 36-hole Masters that followed.
After a birdie at the eighth, followed by two successive bogeys, he picked up further shots at 12, 13, 14, 16 and 17.
Ruth (China Fleet) made five birdies but the day’s outstanding recovery came from man-in-form Ashley Mansell (Clevedon).
A mundane start before he took eight at the par five 10th to slip to five-over-par gave no indication of what was to follow.
The 24-year-old first-year trainee eclipsed Mills’ effort by ending with six birdies in eight holes to claim third place as the only other player under par.
Adrian Harris (Broadstone), Lee Thompson (Dudsbury), Paul Jones (Canford Magna) and Chris Gill (Newquay) shared fourth on level par.
Ruth’s steady play helped the Turier Scales team of Nigel Newport-Black, Alex Newport-Black and Tom Dyer take the main prize on
86 points. Dudsbury took the other top two places.
Home assistant Matt Williams with Brendan Delaney, Paul Burgess and Keith Webb were three points behind, beating another Dudsbury team of Matt Morris, Lee Wyeth and Joe Moody led by David Morris (Bells Hotel and Forest of Dean) on countback.
