Guy Woodman (Longball Inc) has added another low score to the region’s recent tally, shooting a new course record eight-under-par 62 to win the Sand Martins Pro-Am by four shots.
Woodman easily outshone the four-under-par 66 of Paul Newman (East Berks), and almost as remarkable was the fact that neither of them dropped a shot to par.
As a result the pair cleaned up, with Woodman taking the £1,000 winner’s cheque and Newman taking home £725, leaving the trio of Christopher Rodgers, Andy Raitt (St. George’s Hill) and Tom Fleming (Newbury & Crookham) sharing third spot with cards of 67.
Woodman’s day was made even sweeter as his score included a perfect hole-in-one at the 156 yard 12th, where he hit a nine iron.
"It just starting to rain and the air was quite heavy, but it was a beautifully struck shot that never left the line of the pin,” he said
“I thought that if it cleared the bunker it could be quite close, and then we saw it bounce past and spin back down the hole!”
As the 12th is alongside the 10th, there were quite a few other players that witnessed this rare and inspiring event.
Not content with a winning score of 62 and a hole-in-one, Woodman also led his amateur team to a countback victory in the team event as well, edging out Alresford’s Rob Gowers and his team that also had a total of -17.
Woodman added: “I now live 15 minutes from Sand Martins, so it feels more like my home course and I know it pretty well, where to go for it and where to play safe.
“Sand Martins really suits my game, and I always look forward to playing in this event, as the course seems to get better every year. The greens are always fantastic.”
Woodman rated his score as one of his better ones thanks to holing one or two more putts than usual.
“When I was faced with the last three holes, two of which were par fives, I was very aware of what could happen. But in the end I hit a couple of poor drives and did well to make pars!”
Woodman’s attachment to Longball Inc is a new development for 2015, and he’s looking forward to a successful relationship with the Canadian golf apparel manufacturer and new South Region Associate.
“I’ll be playing less golf, but I’m still very passionate about the game. I’m still practising hard and there’s some good stuff left as today’s score shows.”
