The Tiger Woods revival inspired Richard Hanlon as he led the final Marston’s Brewery Order of Merit tournament at The Point at Polzeath.
The Midlander based at nearby St Kew hit 17 greens and almost holed his bunker shot at the second hole to post six-under-par 66 in the first round of the 36-hole event.
He said: “I have always been a Tiger fan and watched every shot as he won for the first time in five years on Sunday. It’s about time I won again as my only OOM win since I came to the West was eight years ago in the Forest Hills Classic.
“Conditions were perfect with only a slight breeze and the greens were really pure although I missed four putts from inside eight feet.
“It felt good to lead such a talented group of players as the cream of the West came out on top but the second round will be a stiff challenge.”
Three players are just one shot behind, including Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge) who is playing the most consistent golf of his career. He made seven birdies in his quest for a Play-Off spot.
Will Farley (Bovey Castle) also joins the final three-ball for the first time after his best return in his debut season. He and Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) both made five birdies in flawless rounds.
The battle for the three Play-Off slots in Turkey will continue until the final putt. OOM leader Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle) is three shots off the pace while close contenders Kevin Harper (East Devon) and Scott Drummond share fifth with third placed David Dixon (Enmore Park) a further shot back.
Toby Hunt (St Mellons) will require a spectacular round to qualify after a level par 72 on a day when 17 players bettered par
