Respected golf teacher and former Ladies European Tour player Morag Wright has lost a three-year battle with breast cancer and passed away aged 48.
The Winterberg Golf Academy PGA Professional, from Dumfries, continued to teach throughout the years following her diagnosis, taking as little time off as possible so that she could continue to give golf lessons as normal to her many students.
Wright, who totalled four hole-in-ones during her career, first took up golf aged eight, and went on to experience great success in the amateur game, culminating in her being crowned the Scottish Order of Merit champion in 1992.
During this time she worked part-time in the professional shop at Dumfries and County Golf Club, where she dedicated herself to learning about golf business under PGA Professional Gordon Gray.
She joined the PGA in 1996 following two short spells on the LET, which included a top 20 finish in the Dutch Open, and completed her exams at the turn of the millennium, being named assistant of the year at the annual graduation ceremony.
She would go on to spend a total of 16 years working at Winterberg, close to Zurich, where she quickly became known as a teacher who liked to combine serious learning with a fun, enjoyable approach.
Ross McDermid, a Winterberg colleague and friend of Wright, said: “Mo was a very popular lady and PGA golf pro with a vast collection of friends including golfers and golf pro colleagues from all around the world.
“She had touched the lives of hundreds of golfers in her time as a successful amateur and professional and will be greatly missed.
“Morag may be gone, but will never be forgotten and will always hold a special place in the memories of all those who had the chance to see her golfing talents and experience her teaching skills.”
